LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Lee Ramsey grew up in Topeka, Kansas and spent 40 years as a petroleum engineer.

His daughter eventually attended Texas Tech, leading him to make the journey to Lubbock."She decided she followed me my whole career," Ramsey said, "so she said when you retire, you need to follow me and Texas Tech, and Lubbock, Texas was the retirement location."Ramsey later invested in films and got more involved in the projects, leading to a new movie titled 'Under the Painted Sky'."It's based on the book 'The Moccasin Speaks', which follows the German family after the Civil War in Georgia. They're told they can make better lives in Colorado, so the family of nine starts the arduous journey in 1870. Four years later, Native Americans from the Cheyanne tribe kill five of them and capture four daughters. The story focuses on their rescue and reunion. Ramsey says director Ken Spurgeon, along with his crew, really help bring stories like these to life."He's a history professor at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and he's done a number of movies telling historical stories in Kansas," Ramsey said. "He has a team of producers that are involved in costumes, hair, realistic uniforms in terms of the military, realistic dress for the Indians."Behind the scenes, Ramsey says he has seen the project come to life and appreciates everything he's seen while on set."They'll have a list of scenes that they're going to do for the day and see them replay them three or four times to try and get creative, maybe bring a drone shot into the thing," Ramsey said. "All the different ways they're going with cameras and getting creative and what you find is the people on set a lot of times make suggestions.

They've done several of these things, and people on set say 'have you thought about this?' There's a lot of creativeness going on out there in real time."This story holds significance to Ramsey personally, as he is a descendant of two of the girls in the story, Sophia and Addie German. He's hoping people see this movie to learn more about the story's historical impact."From a family position, these things are important to share," Ramsey said, "but I've also recognized that if you come into the Lubbock area, many people don't know the story, and for sure if you take it coast-to-coast, this is a story people haven't heard."'Under the Painted Sky' is currently in post-production and is looking to hit theatres or streaming in the near future.
