NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - A Nacogdoches County caretaker is behind bars after police say she forged checks totaling more than $14,000 from a client after her death.

Mary Elizabeth Berry, 48, was held Tuesday at the Nacogdoches County Jail on warrants charging her with multiple felonies, including:Five counts of fraudulent use or possession of identifying materialsTwo counts of forgery against elderly individualFinancial abuse of the elderly valued more than $750 but less than $2,500In October 2025, the daughter of a Nacogdoches woman reported that she suspected a caretaker identified as Berry stole money from her late mother, according to an affidavit.

Mary Elizabeth Berry(Nacogdoches County Jail)A detective reviewed an original ledger and carbon copy of a check written for $4,000, and bank records later revealed Berry wrote "teen" after the four, cashed the check and deposited the money into her personal bank account, according to an affidavit.
