A month of relative calm in the Middle East was shattered over the weekend as United States and Iranian forces traded military strikes, raising fears of renewed escalation in the region.
U.S. forces initiated the exchange by striking Iranian rocket launchers situated on the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. officials stated the defensive strikes were carried out to mitigate an active threat from Iran and to protect civilian and commercial vessels navigating the critical shipping lane.
