(KGNS) - Mayor Victor Trevino said in a statement that he opposes the reinstallation of a buoy barrier system in the Rio Grande and plans to contact federal authorities with Congressman Henry Cuellar.

Trevino said he and Cuellar support border security but want officials to address concerns about drinking water, public safety and international commerce.

In a statement, Trevino called the reinstallation "a sad day in our community's history." He also said Laredo is among the safest cities in the country."We support border security and the men and women who protect our border," Trevino said.
