Usually when the opportunity comes to write about Labor Day, my approach has been to discuss its history that grew out of extraordinarily unjust working conditions that oppressed working people and to observe the benefits that the movement brought to American workers generally, such as five-day, 40-hour work weeks, health insurance, retirement, minimum wage and the like.

The labor movement benefited the community.
