HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- As concerns about AI loom over Americans, the director of Rice University's Medical Humanities Research Institute says artificial intelligence is commonly used to create and maintain medical records.
"It's incredibly prevalent," Dr. Kirsten Ostherr told ABC13. "Most hospitals and healthcare systems in the United States (and across Europe) are using these tools." Ostherr, along with two co-authors, recently published an article analyzing the results of "40 or 50 different studies" that focused on the use of AI for medical notes and records.
"Usually, physicians are expected to let you know that it's being used," Ostherr explained.
