LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Habitat for Humanity of Deep East Texas broke ground Thursday on the new Denman Heights Subdivision, a planned development that could bring up to 10 affordable homes to Lufkin.

The property was purchased by Denman Avenue Baptist Church in the 1980s under the leadership of the late Pastor Charles Roberts, who served the congregation for 34 years.

Nine years ago, Pastor Jacob Fitzgerald returned to Lufkin to lead the church and brought the idea of donating the land to Habitat for Humanity before the congregation."Our church family welcomed that, and they all elected unanimously to establish a relationship with Habitat for Humanity and give that property to them," Fitzgerald said.
