HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Friday night's varsity high school football game between Bellaire and Lamar has been canceled after reports of a widespread staph infection, according to the Houston Independent School District.

HISD said in a letter sent to parents on Wednesday that it is aware of the reported skin infections within the Bellaire football program, which were later confirmed as staph.

The game-time decision was made with guidance from the HISD Health and Medical Department along with the Houston Health Department.
