Harris County's governing body approved $2.5 million in public funds Thursday to support the District Attorney's independent probe into a fatal shooting by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, according to unanimous action by commissioners.
District Attorney Sean Teare said the allocation would support investigative needs over the next three years, though he indicated a determination on potential charges could come sooner. He explained the money may be directed toward hiring additional full-time investigators, compensating staff for overtime work, or retaining outside legal experts if circumstances warrant such steps.
The shooting claimed the life of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on July 7 in the Magnolia Park area of the county. The incident drew national attention and reignited debate over fatal force used by federal immigration agents, particularly as the incoming Trump administration prepares to intensify deportation operations. Salgado Araujo's son attended Thursday's events related to the funding announcement.
Teare acknowledged that the investigation already faces significant hurdles in its fact-gathering phase. He cited the substantial volume of data requiring collection from vehicles present at the shooting scene as a particular challenge. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Commissioner Rodney Ellis participated in a press conference before the commissioners' vote at the county administration building.
The District Attorney's office is conducting its independent examination simultaneously with separate investigations being pursued by the FBI and the Texas Rangers. Thursday's action comes as Harris County grapples with broader fiscal pressures, following commissioners' warnings in July that the county faces a $129 million budget shortfall, potentially requiring fee increases and service reductions.
