Governor Abbott Activates State Emergency Response Resources Ahead Of Flood Threat

AUSTIN, TX (NEWS RELEASE) - Governor Greg Abbott today directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources ahead of heavy rainfall and flooding threats expected to impact portions of West Texas and the Texas Panhandle over the next several days." Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the state's emergency management division to put resources on standby in anticipation of severe weather that could bring significant rainfall and flooding to portions of the Texas Panhandle, South Plains and Far West Texas.

The National Weather Service forecasted that thunderstorms capable of producing intense precipitation would begin moving into the region as early as Tuesday, with conditions expected to worsen as the week progressed. Excessive rainfall and flash flooding represented the primary threats from the storm system. Abbott urged residents to stay informed about developing conditions, check local weather updates and follow instructions from emergency officials.

"The State of Texas is prepared to respond to the threat of heavy rainfall and flooding," Abbott said, noting that assistance was ready to help communities manage the impending weather event. He emphasized the danger of flooded roadways, cautioning Texans against attempting to traverse standing water either by vehicle or on foot, as flood depths and currents frequently exceed what observers perceive.

At Abbott's direction, multiple state agencies positioned personnel and equipment to assist with response operations. The Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service readied swift water rescue teams equipped with boats for potential flood rescues. The state highway system would have monitoring personnel assigned to assess road conditions and transportation impacts. Texas Parks and Wildlife personnel, including game wardens and helicopter crews with lifting capabilities, stood ready for water rescue operations. The Department of Public Safety positioned Highway Patrol units, additional helicopters and tactical marine crews for rapid deployment.

Medical support teams, complete with paramedics and ambulances, were staged through the Texas Emergency Medical Task Force. Agricultural and livestock specialists were prepared to assess disaster damage and coordinate recovery efforts for farming operations. Utility agencies were directed to monitor power disruptions while regulatory bodies tracked impacts to natural gas supplies and environmental conditions.
