Man charged with capital murder for shooting ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend in N. Houston, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An investigation is underway after an apparent shooting in north Houston on Monday, according to the Houston Police Department. [ABC13 Eyewitness News]

A 31-year-old Houston man faces capital murder charges stemming from a Monday morning shooting that left two people dead on the city's north side, authorities said. David Herrera was arrested after investigators tracked him down using automated license plate recognition technology and witness accounts, according to Houston Police Department officials.

The fatal shooting occurred around 8:20 a.m. in the 900 block of Lindale Street when neighbors reported hearing gunshots. Officers discovered two victims dead in front of the residence. The deceased were identified as 29-year-old Dariela Cardona and 41-year-old Erick Von Gerbitz, who had recently resumed their romantic relationship, police said.

According to investigators, Herrera had become jealous over Cardona's reconciliation with Von Gerbitz. Police said Herrera and Cardona shared a child together. The couple had dropped off their son at school before returning home when the shooting took place in broad daylight, authorities noted.

Witnesses provided crucial details to investigators, including surveillance footage from a doorbell camera that captured a red vehicle leaving the scene immediately after the gunshots. Officers responding to the scene determined that no one was inside the residence at the time of the arrival. Cardona's family members, including her parents, lived at the home with her and her two young sons.

Using automated license plate technology, detectives identified and located Herrera following the morning shooting. He was subsequently taken into custody and booked into Harris County Jail, where he was charged with capital murder in connection with both deaths. Police described the incident as stemming from a domestic violence matter involving Cardona's former boyfriend.
