A fire destroyed a building at a Cherokee County plant nursery facility Tuesday evening, prompting a significant emergency response that continued through the night.

The blaze ignited at Altman Plants at approximately 6:30 p.m., quickly consuming a structure primarily utilized for soil preparation operations. Thick plumes of dark smoke rose visibly into the evening sky as the flames spread through the facility.

Approximately six fire departments deployed crews to battle the inferno. Firefighters worked throughout the night to suppress hot spots and prevent the fire from spreading to other structures on the property. Company officials said firefighting efforts successfully prevented the flames from affecting other buildings at the nursery.

The swift response from first responders benefited from unexpected assistance. Staff members who had left work earlier in the day voluntarily returned to the scene to help. These employees removed equipment and supplies from areas threatened by the advancing flames and provided support to firefighting personnel, including supplying them with water and refreshments during their extended efforts.

The specific cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities. No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.
