(KGNS) - Laredo city officials are seeking Webb County's backing to lobby the Texas Legislature for a specialized tax mechanism designed to finance a long-discussed convention center without raising property taxes.

While city leaders have weighed building a convention center for decades, voters have repeatedly rejected bond proposals over cost concerns.

In response, officials have shifted focus toward securing state revenue before choosing a location.
