Joe Kiely, vice president of operations for the Ports-to-Plains Alliance, told KBEST News the funding request would begin the process of determining what improvements are necessary to bring the existing U.S. 87 reliever route up to interstate standards as part of Future I-27.

Congressman Jodey Arrington submitted the $2 million Fiscal Year 2027 Community Project Funding request for an Interstate Feasibility and Gap Analysis of the Big Spring route.
