(KGNS) - The Laredo City Council approved a five-year contract to address a staffing shortage within the police department.

The department is short nearly 80 officers, with 498 of its 575 authorized positions currently filled.

City leaders said raising base pay is intended to curb burnout and prevent turnover to competing agencies.
