HARRISON COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - Harrison County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Thursday, officially joining the growing effort to create a multi-county groundwater conservation district.

The proposed Northeast Texas Groundwater Conservation District would work to preserve and protect the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, which underlies a portion of East Texas."Groundwater is one of the most valuable natural resources in the State of Texas and is essential to the public health, safety, economic prosperity, agriculture, industry, and quality of life of the citizens of Northeast Texas," the passed resolution states in part.

"The Commissioners Court of Harrison County hereby supports the creation by the Texas Legislature of a regional groundwater conservation district encompassing appropriate portions of Northeast Texas overlying the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer."Fifteen other East Texas counties, including Smith, Gregg, Upshur and Wood have all initiated efforts in support of the district's creation, according to Harrison County Judge Chad Sims.
