For deaf students like Canyon High School junior Payton Wilson, awareness is a key component surrounding accessibility in the classroom.

The city of New Braunfels recognized September as Deaf Awareness Month during a city council meeting on Sept. 14, proclaiming September as an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the deaf and hard of hearing community, promote awareness of deaf culture and encourage greater understanding and inclusion within the community.

Wilson was born with some hearing, but lost the rest of it at three years old after hitting her head.
