LAREDO, Tex.

(KGNS) - United ISD campuses opened Wednesday, Aug. 12, for the first day of the 2026-27 school year, with the district projecting enrollment of more than 38,000 students.

Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz spoke to reporters at Ruiz Elementary School, saying staff spent the summer preparing facilities, updating security protocols and providing professional development to teaching staff.
