For the first time in 25 years, Texas is building new state juvenile detention facilities, a major investment that comes as the number of young people referred to the juvenile justice system for gun-related crimes has risen sharply.
In 2020, 1,708 juveniles were referred to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department for offenses involving firearms.
By 2025, that number had climbed to 2,474, up nearly 45%.
