LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - Longview's Pumpkin Roll event draws its name and location from the story of how the city got its name, according to Gregg County Historical Museum Director Jennifer White.
In the 1870s, O.H. Methvin showed railroad executives the area from the top of a hill now known as Rock Hill, located behind the Gregg County Courthouse."O.H. Methvin was showing some railroad executives the area, he took them to the top of an area called Rock Hill that is currently behind the Gregg County Courthouse," White said.
"It's still the highest point in the county. The generally accepted tale, is that he took them to the top of the hill and they said: 'You sure do have a long view from this area.'"Early accounts had the name written as two words.
