Savoy ISD cancels high school football game due to staph infection outbreak

Savoy Independent School District halted multiple activities Thursday after school officials confirmed that several male athletes on the high school team had contracted staph infections, district administrators announced Wednesday.

The district canceled Thursday's scheduled pep rally and postponed the high school football game in response to the bacterial outbreak. The junior high squad's football contest, originally planned as a home event, was relocated to an away matchup against Fannindel.

In a statement, Savoy ISD outlined its response measures to contain the spread of the contagious infection. The district has implemented daily sanitization protocols for facilities where athletes train and prepare for competition, including the weight room, locker rooms, training tables and football equipment. Additionally, athletes at both the junior and senior high levels have received information about hygiene practices and infection prevention.

District officials did not disclose the specific number of student-athletes diagnosed with the staphylococcal infection. Parents concerned their children may have been exposed were directed to reach out to the high school secretary at 903-965-4024 for guidance and next steps.

The district's decision to modify the athletic schedule reflects efforts to minimize potential transmission among the student population and staff.
