State officials deploy helicopters and firefighters as Texas enters peak wildfire season

Gov. Greg Abbott responded to escalating wildfire threats across North Texas and the Panhandle region by ordering the Texas Division of Emergency Management to deploy additional firefighting resources Tuesday.

The decision reflects worsening conditions that have prompted intensified preparation efforts. Parched vegetation combined with elevated summer temperatures have created an environment particularly susceptible to rapid fire ignition, state officials said. August consistently ranks as the most dangerous month for wildfire activity in Texas, according to state agencies monitoring fire risk.

Abbott stated in a written announcement that the expanded deployment would guarantee local emergency responders continued access to a full complement of state-supplied personnel, specialized equipment and aerial assets needed to safeguard residents and structures.

The new mobilization supplements resources that state officials had already stationed strategically across Texas following a decision by the Texas A&M Forest Service last week to elevate the Wildland Fire Preparedness Level to Level 2. This preparedness classification signals heightened danger and readiness thresholds across the state's fire management system.

State authorities advised residents to implement protective steps to reduce risk. Officials recommended avoiding recreational activities or actions that could generate sparks or open flames, assembling emergency supply collections for potential evacuation scenarios, and developing family evacuation strategies in advance of any threats.
