US Coast Guard suspends search for missing kayaker off South Padre Island

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Search and rescue operations ended Saturday evening after a kayaker vanished in waters near the southern tip of South Padre Island, marking the conclusion of an intensive six-hour effort by multiple agencies.

Authorities received notification of the missing paddler at approximately 4:30 p.m., with the person last reported roughly 400 yards from shore near Beach Access 6. Initial reports indicated the individual was operating a kayak at the time of disappearance. While rescuers later recovered the kayak itself, the paddler could not be located.

The U.S. Coast Guard mobilized resources across an expansive search area, ultimately covering approximately 168 square nautical miles before suspending active operations shortly after dark. The service coordinated its efforts with Cameron County Park Rangers and Cameron County Beach Patrol to maximize search capabilities across the region.

"Anytime we have a report of a person in the water, we surge as many assets to the scene as quickly as we can, and search for as long as we can reasonably hope to find the person," said CDR Jared Korn, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator for Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi. "Whenever we suspend from actively searching we work in close coordination with our other government agency partners, as we did in this case."

Though the intensive search operation concluded with sunset, officials indicated coordination with partner agencies would continue as circumstances warranted. The Coast Guard stressed its commitment to maintaining awareness of any additional developments connected to the incident.
