Westbury High School senior shot and killed near campus, Houston police say

A teenager attending Westbury High School in southwest Houston was fatally shot Friday morning in an off-campus incident, spurring a manhunt by local and state law enforcement in the area.

The shooting occurred near Dryad Drive and Chimney Rock Road, close to the school's main campus at 11911 Chimney Rock Road, sometime before 8:30 a.m., according to Houston Police Department officials. The victim, identified as a 17-year-old senior at the school, was struck during the incident. HPD's homicide unit responded to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz confirmed that no active threat existed within the school building itself and that students and staff remained secure throughout the incident. The Houston Independent School District placed Westbury High School in secure mode as authorities worked the scene and gathered information. District officials emphasized that campus operations remained protected during the investigation.

Investigators have secured video footage from a nearby apartment complex and were actively working to obtain additional surveillance recordings from surrounding properties. Officers also conducted neighborhood interviews, with two individuals providing statements to police about what they witnessed. The suspected shooter remained at large as of Friday, with no arrests made in connection with the killing.

The state deployed an additional 25 troopers to assist Houston police in their search for the suspect, expanding the investigative effort across the area. Diaz said he personally reached out to the victim's family members, describing their emotional state following the tragedy. Authorities provided support services to the grieving relatives as the investigation progressed.
