Governor Abbott will honor two Lubbock County Sheriff's deputies with the Star of Texas Award for their heroism following a semi-truck crash on I-27 that left them injured while assisting a motorist.

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Two Lubbock County Sheriff's deputies will receive the Star of Texas Award after they were injured in a crash last year on I-27 at 98th Street.
On September 8, 2025, deputies Andrew Cavazos and Jorge Martinez were assisting a motorist changing a flat tire on the side of the road when a semi-truck rear-ended their patrol units.
The two deputies were pinned between their unit and a concrete barrier.
