According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a male and a female from Evant perished in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 36, a half-mile south of FM 1476, in Comanche County at 11:40 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4. The preliminary investigation determined that a 2020 GMC 2500 4-door pickup and a 2020 Kia Sorento were approaching each other from opposite directions on SH 36. The GMC was traveling southbound in the oncoming lane, attempting to pass a line of vehicles in a "no passing" zone.

As the vehicles approached one another, both drivers tried to avoid a collision by moving onto the shoulder and then back into the lane.

However, their actions mirrored one another, resulting in a head-on collision in the northbound lane.
