TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - East Texas has gone weeks without significant rainfall, continuing Smith County's burn ban and increasing the dangers of wildfires."I don't think we are in a position to lift the burn ban at this time," Smith County Fire Marshal Chad Hogue told officials during the county's monthly commissioners court meeting.

More than 200 instances of outdoor burning have been reported in unincorporated areas since the burn ban was issued five weeks ago, Hogue said.

Tuesday's average Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) for Smith County was 721, an increase from the 691 Hogue reported a week ago.
